One is the philosophical principle of autonomy, which I regularly teach in my bioethics class. Some doctors thought I would have to spend my life in a rehabilitation unit, learning to think again, but never fully recovering. There I met an excellent doctor who told me I could recover. The worst doesn’t always occur.
