Those HIPAA updates were followed by the incorporation of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, which saw the introduction of the Breach Notification Rule in 2009 and the Omnibus Final Rule in 2013. It is now 10 years since the last major HIPAA update took effect.

New HIPAA Regulations in 2022-2023

The compliance date for the CMS rule was July 1, 2021. HIPAA-covered entities are then given a grace period to make the necessary changes before compliance with the new HIPAA regulations becomes mandatory and the HIPAA changes become enforceable. The HITECH Act called for an increase in penalties for non-compliance with the HIPAA.
