This morning Swiss company Ascensia Diabetes Care, maker of connected glucose meters, unveiled its new diabetes management and analytics platform, dubbed GlucoContro.online.

The tool is able to work with the company's existing Contour glucose meters and can capture data directly from the Contour Diabetes app or Contour cloud. The new platform is cloud-based and lets users open in their browsers. Users are then able to share their data with clinicians and care teams.

Patients without connected glucose meters are also able to use the technology through a cable, which requires single-step installation, according to the company.  After the information is downloaded, these patients can also tap into their data and share it with care teams.

The data included on the platform range from blood glucose measurements to insulin dosing and food activities.

“Simplifying and improving the lives of people living with diabetes through innovative solutions is at the heart of all we do at Ascensia, and the GlucoContro.online platform is a step towards achieving that," president of Ascensia Diabetes Care Rob Schumm said in a statement.

"It has been borne out of clearly defined unmet needs from both healthcare professionals and people with diabetes. From its simple installation through to the functions that enable quick and easy access and analysis of data, it provides a valuable and uncomplicated way to share and use blood glucose and other data to help clinicians and people optimize their diabetes management.”

WHY IT MATTERS

Diabetes is a common condition all over the world. According to the World Health Organization, as of 2014, 8.5% of adults 18 and over had diabetes. The condition was the cause of 1.5 million deaths in 2019.

In the U.S. alone, 34.2 million adults have diabetes, according to the CDC. The condition can be managed. Worldwide, innovators are looking to help cut down on the burden of management with tech-enabled products.

THE LARGER TREND

Ascensia Diabetes Care was founded in 2016, when Panasonic Healthcare Holdings acquired Bayer Diabetes Care. Later that year it landed FDA clearance for its Contour Next Link blood glucose monitor, which was able to send data wirelessly to Medtronic's MiniMed 630G insulin pump.

Later that year it launched the Contour Next One, which expanded its client based beyond just Medtronic users and could connect via Bluetooth to the Contour Diabetes app.
