What Makes a Perfect Healthcare Compliance Candidate? [Compliance Carl Cartoon]

Do you love CIAs? If you’re a compliance professional, the answer is probably an enthusiastic, “Yes!”

Some folks spend a leisurely Sunday reading a book or baking. And then there’s the type who just can’t get enough of Corporate Integrity Agreements. The latter folks are possibly made for a career in healthcare compliance.

While conducting interviews for a new compliance position, Carl met one of these types, and he was over the moon excited. Hearing they share a love of CIAs was like music to his ears. In that moment what Carl saw was this: Sitting in the breakroom with his new compliance hire, gasping over the millions of dollars flashing like a red flag in the CIAs they've read together over a roast beast sandwich or chatting merrily about the OIG's most recent Work Plan updates.

Why the enthusiasm? Because when an interviewer at a healthcare organization asks why you might be a good fit for their compliance program, a perfect answer might be, “I read CIAs for fun.” It just might signal that you’re an ideal candidate because CIAs are long, detailed, and time-consuming (but absolutely fascinating to some). And as our compliance experts here at Healthicity, Brian Burton and CJ Wolf MD., have pointed out in their most recent episode of Compliance Conversations, the experience can be taught, but that special sauce that makes someone the right character for the job cannot.
