Hospitals deal with ransomware fallout: 5 Prospect Medical updates

Prospect Medical hospitals and outpatient clinics across the U.S. have transitioned to paper records or temporarily closed as their teams work to bring computer systems back online after an Aug. 3 ransomware attack.

Prospect Medical has 16 hospitals and 165 clinics and outpatient centers in five states, many of which were disrupted by the ransomware attack. Five updates:

1. Eastern Connecticut Health Network in Vernon, which has facilities for outpatient surgery and procedures, temporarily closed multiple locations due to IT complications related to the ransomware attack. Some locations and services remained closed on the morning of Aug. 7, according to the ECHN website.

2. Crozer Health based in Upland, Pa., also reported systemwide outages related to the ransomware attack. The three-hospital network diverted ambulances for stroke and trauma patients due to the attack, according to CNN. Crozer's 45-bed Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill remained temporarily closed as of Aug. 7, according to a note on the hospital's website.

3. The New York Times reported Waterbury (Conn.) Hospital, also part of the Prospect Medical network, reported service disruptions. The hospital transitioned to paper records after the ransomware attack and closed some outpatient and diagnostic services.

4. Waterbury HEALTH said in a Facebook update multiple locations including imaging and rehab centers would be closed on Aug. 7 due to the attack.

"Our computer systems are down due to a cybersecurity attack with the outage affecting all Waterbury HEALTH inpatient and outpatient operations. We will continue to evaluate our downtime capabilities and may reschedule some appointments. Waterbury Hospital is following downtime procedures, including the use of paper records, until this is resolved," the Facebook statement reads.

5. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the ransomware attack. Prospect Medical is working with law enforcement on the investigation and the National Security Council is "closely monitoring" the incident, according to CNN.
