At the recent Medical Practice Excellence Leaders conference in San Diego hosted by MGMA, I had a chance to sit down and talk with Dr. Halee Fischer-Wright, President and CEO of MGMA. We’ve been lucky to talk to Dr. Fischer-Wright a number of times over the years and she always offers great insights into what’s happening with medical practices and what’s going to impact them going forward. This time was no exception.
Dr. Fischer-Wright shares some key insights and perspectives on how much medical practices have been impacted by COVID and some of the key lessons we’ve learned from the challenging past couple years. Plus, she dives into the shifting reimbursement landscape and a kind of step back in time as many practices move to more risk based contracts. It’s going to be interesting to see how many practices embrace these new shifts and how many continue with business as usual.
We also ask Dr. Fischer-Wright to share some of the key themes or messages she was hearing for medical practice managers at the conference. Plus, we dive into what impact things like private equity, startups, and big tech companies investing hundreds of millions of dollars into healthcare with things like direct primary care. She aptly points out that this isn’t a new phenomenon, but the scale at which they’re doing it is new. Finally, Dr. Fischer-Wright wraps up by sharing a great story about her mother-in-law’s experience with health IT and engagement with her practice. The story illustrates perfectly the challenge we face and patient’s ability to adapt and change as well.
