The following Cal/OSHA COVID-19 Prevention Non-Emergency Regulations for Dental Healthcare Employees course educates employers and staff with knowledge on preventing coronavirus exposure (SARS-CoV-2), a virus that causes COVID-19. Additionally, the COVID-19 Prevention regulations apply to all employers, employees, and places of employment with the following exceptions:

• Work locations where there is only one employee who does not have contact with other people.
• Employees who are working from home.
• Workers covered by the legislation on Aerosol Transmissible Diseases (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 8, § 5199) (section 5199).
• Employees working from a location chosen by the employee that is not under the control of the employer.

COVID-19 Prevention Requirements

The Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board decided to approve COVID-19 preventative standards that are not emergency measures on December 15, 2022. These regulations went into effect on February 3, 2023. Also, they will remain that way for another two years, except for the recordkeeping subsections, which will remain in effect for three years.

Use of the ATD Standard

Cal/OSHA requires employers covered by the Aerosol Transmissible Disease (ATD) Standard (California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 5199) to protect employees from airborne infectious disease such as COVID-19 and pathogens transmitted by aerosols. Moreover, the ATD Standard applies to a wide variety of entities which include public health services, medical offices, long-term care facilities and other facilities that expose individuals to diseases or procedures that emit aerosols. Although the ATD standard may not apply to all companies, Cal/OSHA has developed special requirements for those who do. These regulations are further outlined in the training course.
