A recent survey of Compliance Officers reveals more than half feel their mental health has been negatively affected by their jobs.

Compliance Officer Burnout

Sponsored by Corporate Compliance Insights, the survey is one of the first in recent years to examine workplace stress and its role on employees. At least 240 compliance officers completed the survey during August and September 2021. It highlights that Compliance Officer stress, burnout, anxiety, and other mental health issues seem to be a part of the job.

Survey: Compliance Officers Stressed, Anxious, Burned Out – “Responsible” but “No Control”

The survey revealed that 59 percent of compliance officers feel “burned out,” 51 percent reported “a lot” or “extreme” job stress, and 56 percent feel their mental health has been negatively affected.

One survey respondent expressed frustration by stating, “I am made to feel responsible for things over which I ultimately have no control.”

Survey: Compliance Officers Stressed, Anxious, Burned Out – “…I can’t get anything wrong”

At least 41 percent of respondents reported anxiety-related difficulties during the previous 12 months. Of that group, 64 percent stated their job played a “large” or “extremely large” role in their anxiety, and 19% report being diagnosed with anxiety in the past year.

Mental health professionals have long recognized that anxiety and depression often go hand-in-hand. The survey indicates this is true among compliance officers as well.

A survey respondent expressed their feelings of anxiety with the statement, “There is an immense pressure to deliver. Other departments have permission to fail. I can’t get anything wrong.”
