DePuy Synthes, Inc. Agrees to Pay $9.75 Million to Settle Fraud Violations

DePuy Synthes recently agreed to pay $9.75 million to settle allegations that it paid kickbacks to healthcare providers committing fraud violations. The U.S. Department of Justice accused the company of violating the False Claims Act by paying kickbacks to physicians and hospitals in exchange for using their products. DePuy Synthes enticed healthcare providers to use their products by providing them with free items.

US Efforts to Crack Down on Fraud Violations

Kickbacks are illegal under the False Claims Act because they can lead to overuse or misuse of medical products, harming patients and increasing healthcare costs. By promoting transparency and accountability, we can ensure that patients receive the best possible care. The settlement with DePuy Synthes is just one example of the U.S. government’s efforts to crack down on healthcare fraud and abuse.

Preventing Future Fraud Violations

DePuy Synthes has agreed to implement a comprehensive compliance program to prevent future violations of the False Claims Act. This includes employee training and education and monitoring compliance with anti-kickback laws and regulations. The settlement also underscores the importance of transparency in the healthcare industry. Patients rely on their doctors to make informed decisions about their care, and physicians should not be swayed by financial incentives to choose one product over another. By holding companies accountable for their actions, the government helps ensure that patients receive the best possible care. Patients should know that the items being used for their care were chosen based on their quality not their cost.
