CIO Podcast – Episode 11: John Kravitz – Health IT Policy and Regulations

For the 11th episode of the CIO podcast hosted by Healthcare IT Today, John Kravitz, SVP/CIO at Geisinger Health and Board Chair at CHIME sat down with special guest host Colin Hung, CMO and Editor at Healthcare IT Today.  Coming out of the CHIME Summer Forum event, we wanted to catch up with Kravitz to learn about what was shared at the virtual event.  Of particular interest was the CHIME session that featured all of the past National Coordinators at ONC.  Kravitz also shares what Geisinger is doing to better integrate EHR into their business and he offers his thoughts on the impact of the information blocking rules.

Kravitz also shares what policy changes we may see coming down the pipe.  Plus, he offers suggestions on what CIOs can do to keep up on all the various healthcare regulations that impact the CIO.  Going beyond policy and regulations, Kravitz shares his advice for new and aspiring healthcare CIOs.

Here’s a look at some of the CHIME Policy Resources that Kravitz mentions:

Here’s a look at the questions and topics we discuss on this episode:

  • You recently attended the CHIME Summer Forum and they covered a lot of policy issues. What were your big takeaways that other CIOs should know about from the event?
  • One of the sessions at the Forum featured past National Coordinators at the ONC. What insights did they share? And what did you glean from hearing about the where we have been?
  • ONC really drove EHR adoption. Some would say there was a missed opportunity to not only digitize healthcare through EHRs but make healthcare more interoperable. That’s now been left up to vendors and leading organizations like Geisinger. Can you share with us some of the work you are doing to better integrate your EHR into your business and clinical operations?
  • Let’s talk about information blocking. Are the information blocking rules going to really make healthcare more interoperable?
  • What are the biggest policy changes you’re watching or that you’re hoping will come down the pipe?
  • How does a CIO like yourself keep up to speed on all the latest regulations?
  • For the new CIOs or aspiring CIOs out there, what advice would you give them?
